Bionic Commando Impressions…

by Ming on May 17, 2009, under Gaming

So, after playing Bionic Commando on X360 for a bit, I’d have to say I’m not entirely impressed by the game. The idea with his bionic arm and being able to swing from almost anything is cool, however it can be really poorly executed at times. Unfortunately this isn’t a 2D scroller with only so many places you can swing on, to, and from.

One of the main issues I have with it, is the way you swing. You hold the Left Trigger down to shoot your arm out and grapple onto things, when you release, he lets go. Simple and easy enough right? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve feel into water because I tapped trigger since I don’t know if i’m close enough to grab it or not. Then, between the time I can use the grapple again I fall just far enough to not be able to grapple onto it. One of the things I wonder if they even tried, is to make some sort of system where the grapple just auto targets the closest thing to your cursor (even if it is on the edge of the screen) instead of just what’s on your cursor because when you’re jumping and flying through the air, it can be hard at times to target what you’re trying to grapple. (and it’s hard to grapple and try to shoot something at the same time.)

Camera? What game doesn’t have issues with the camera? Anyways, there are times where the camera goes crazy when you’re trying to jump up onto a platform and either looks straight up or straight down, which can get annoying.

Difficulty - Not too hard, most of the enemies die within a few shots, some enemies require you to latch onto their back and zip in and kick them. The hardest parts I’d say are the grapple sequences where you have to navigate through a field of floating mines using your grapple and messing up at one point only to start over again because you fell into the water.

As of right now, I can’t tell if I want to continue playing the game or not.

Note: I need to find something that will allow me to take screen grabs or video of X360/PS3 games.
